Steam review
"POSTED: 4 DECEMBER
I really want to like this game, but I think I'm done for the time being. I look forward to any future patches it might get, though.
The ambience is wonderful, but the world certainly doesn't feel properly lived in--after playing for 5 hours and visiting three hub areas, every NPC still says the same three or four lines of dialogue. I have no idea why every character in the game needs a dialogue prompt when 95% of them are just going to tell me to ♥♥♥♥ off.
The lack of characters in addition to the very slight story would not typically be something I care about. It's a deep RPG and there's a wonderful world here that I want to create my own story in, but the gameplay just won't let me. I don't feel like I've died a single time with it being my fault.
Earlier today I was constantly getting detected while sneaking in a room three stories up by some guy all the way on the ground floor with no possible view towards me (the Mortbane chapel), and I'm constantly being attacked THROUGH walls. I'll be fighting someone in a closed room, and another enemy will 'hear' the fight, rush to my location and start attacking me from behind. That's fair enough, but if you spin the camera around you can clearly see that he's attacking me with a sword through the wall. The game very often acts like the walls don't even exist. This is a very bad thing for a stealthy game to do.
The game's pathfinding swings wildly from some dog-like creatures (in Mortbane) being able to detect me up on a wire high above the city and immediately parkour its way up over roofs and electricity poles in order to confront me, to a human Technomagi running into a wall that's right in front of his face for 30 seconds because it can't figure out to walk around this structure.
Even the flimsy stealth and movement mechanics could be dismissed if the combat was good or even effective, but sneaking up behind a Technomagi and hitting him with a backstab using my flaming daggers will only do 80% of the enemy's HP. Then to finish the job, I have to tediously mash the attack button for a solid 30 seconds and hope no other enemy patrols through the zone. I get that these are well-armoured guards, but engaging one of them is either insurmountable or just plain boring, depending upon your luck.
Ultimately, the sneaking is unreliable and the fighting is bad. I don't want to do this anymore. The world in this game seems fantastic and I want to experience more of it, but I can't recommend anyone actually play it."
