Prolific Hollywood composer James Horner has been killed in a plane crash in southern California, according to The Hollywood Reporter.
The news was reportedly confirmed by Horner’s assistant Sylvia Patrycja via a post on social media.
A short time ago CBS Los Angeles revealed that a plane registered to Horner had crashed 60 miles north of Santa Barbara, killing the pilot. The plane was a two-seater S-312 Tucano MK1 turbo-prop, but no one else has been reported on board. It was not immediately clear whether Horner himself was flying the plane but the 61-year-old was unaccounted for following the crash.
Jay Cooper, a lawyer for the Horner family, confirmed with The Guardian the plane was one of several that Horner owned and said that no one has heard from Horner, saying, “if he wasn’t in it, he would have called.”
The circumstances surrounding the crash are currently still being investigated.
Horner, one of Hollywood’s most well-known composers, wrote scores for an eclectic mix of over 100 films throughout his career, including Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Braveheart, Commando, Field of Dreams, The Land Before Time, Jumanji, Apollo 13, Casper, The Amazing Spider-Man, and many, many more.
He picked up the first of his 10 Oscar nominations for his work on Aliens and also has the distinction of being the composer for the two highest-grossing films in history: Avatar and Titanic, the latter of which remains the highest-selling primarily orchestral soundtrack ever. Horner won two Academy Awards on the back of Titanic; one for Best Original Dramatic Score and the other for Best Original Song (for Titanic's “My Heart Will Go On”).
